Spring Break!

Spring Break!

Only one more quarter to go for this year. We had a great “walk to lunch” on Thursday. We definitely got our exercise in for the day. Everyone had a great time eating off campus. Friday we had our assembly, cleaned our room and watched the movie version of our class novel “Old Yeller”.

Get some sun…. relax… have fun… and I will see you all on April 2, 2013.

Spring Break Assignment

March 13, 2013

Dear Students and Parents,

Spring Break is here. Generally this is a time to work hard and fill in any gaps that you do not understand, and to begin reviewing for our California Standards Test at the end of April/May.

Instead of copying endless review sheets for you, I am asking that you do something instead.

I would like for you to visit the following website:

http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/sr/css05rtq.asp

and print out your grade’s Math Released Test Questions and complete all 95 of them before Friday, April 5th.  These are questions from previous year’s tests. In doing these questions you will get a strong idea of what you need to know for the state test. Except for Geometry (a unit that we have not studied yet, but many of you know it already) pick 5 questions that gave you trouble that you would like the whole class to review.

You may also download and print the English Language Arts portion and complete this packet as well.  It can only help practice the comprehension, grammar and punctuation.

If, for some reason you are unable to print and complete the math problems….. Go to your local book store and buy a “Test Prep” book for your grade level and work out of that.

Of course, reading over the break is important. In addition, I have some wonderful links to websites that will also be fun and helpful. Play on multiplication.com or ixl.com on a daily basis to keep your skills strong.

The more you do, the better off your will be. Take responsibility for your education!

Have a restful and fun vacation.

Be Safe,

Mrs. Robyn Haber

Last week of Third Quarter

Just a reminder that the t-shirts are being shared tomorrow from 8:30 -9:15 am.

Thursday we are walking to lunch and everyone is welcome. We leave campus at 11:00am. No permission slip…. no walk.

We decided to postpone our AR goal party until Friday at lunch. We finished our class novel and everyone wants a chance to test on it.

All is well in Room 502

Didn’t win… Still feel very valued. Thank you!

Dear Robyn,

On behalf of the LifeChanger of the Year Selection Committee, I want to again congratulate you on your nomination and thank you for your participation in the 2012 – 2013 LifeChanger of the Year program.

Thank you to those parents that are coming with us on Thursday to the movies.

I will be sending home the permission slips for our “walk to lunch” on March 14th soon.

We have officially started another Reading Challenge….. read, read, read!

Tuesday is the 4th grade writing test! Good Luck!

Start working on your lit. circle t-shirt. You can simply take an old t-shirt and turn it inside out….. you do not need to buy a new one, unless you want to. I will attach the direction page to the homework pages in case you lost yours.

See you on Monday!

Only two more weeks in quarter 3

Thank you to those parents that signed and returned the AR print-outs. You have earned your child $500 on Monday.

It has been announced that The Reading Challenge is back on! For the next two weeks we are asking the students to read voraciously and accumulate as many points as possible. I am expecting that many of my students will meet and exceed their AR goals! Read! read! read!

I am having my AR goal party on Wednesday, March 13th at lunch. Some of the students expressed a desire for Pizza. Can we make this happen? I’ll be asking for help and donations as it gets closer.

Just a reminder that all Lit Circle packets are due this Monday morning and that the t-shirt project will be worn and shared on Wednesday, March 13th at 8:30 am.

Tuesday is our 4th grade writing test! We are ready!

Thursday we are going to the movies. We are still looking for drivers.

Thursday night is the Science Fair 6 -7:30 pm… I’ll see you there!

Parent Conferences start on Thursday as well.

So much is happening, I hope that I am keeping you up to date. Please feel free to contact me with any questions at any time!

We Finished our Compliment Chain!

Dear Parents,

We finished our second compliment chain! As a reward the students have voted on going off campus for lunch. Last year I walked my 2nd graders to the Target shopping center near the Starbucks and we ate in the courtyard. This worked very well and this class would like to have the same experience. The students can either bring a sack lunch with them or buy lunch at one of the various restaurants in that immediate area. (Subway, Pizza, Panda Express, Jamba Juice, Luna Grill ) Because we are going off campus, every child will need a permission slip signed.

I have decided that the best day for us to go is Thursday, March 14th.  We will leave campus at 11:00 am… walk to the strip center, buy and eat lunch, then walk back by 1:15 for dismissal.

If any Parent would like to come with us… you are more than welcome. Permission slips will be coming home soon. No permission slip… can’t go.

So much is happening as we wind down this quarter. Please take note and mark your calendars:

March 4th: Lit Circle #5 meeting; 5th grade weigh in for PE testing

March 5th : 4th grade Writing Test

March 6th: writing make ups

March 7th: Science Fair projects due to the Auditorium (7:30 -8:15), Movie Reward (we leave at 8:45); Night time Science Fair

March 12th: 5th grade PE testing; Jeremy Galy comes for 2nd visit

March 13th: Lit Circle T-shirts due; AR goal party at lunch; Report Cards go home

March 14th: Walk to Lunch

March 15th: Report card envelopes returned; Awards Assembly and last day of quarter

February 22, 2013

Dear Parents,
Thank you to those parents that have already sent in the request for the Report Card Conferences. I will get you a confirmation by next Friday.

It looks like we are going to go to the movies on Thursday, March 7th as a reward for working so hard toward the 4th grade writing test. I am going to take my entire class to this event. Both grades have been doing a tremendous amount of writing and deserve the treat.

We will need parent drivers on that day. Here are the details:
Movie title: Escape from Planet Earth
Movie cost = $5 per person
Movie theater = Regal Movies on H st.
Leaving the school at 8:45 am
Returning to school around 12:00 noon
Need parent drivers and chaperones – must fill out an insurance form

If you are interested in joining us, please let me know.

Just a reminder that Monday, February 25th at 8:30 am is our #4 meeting of Literature Circles and all jobs must be completed.

Science Fair projects will be turned in on Thursday, March 7th before we go to the movies!

February 20, 2013

Thank you for the Valentines Day candy and wishes. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the treats.

We have only 2 weeks left until the CST writing test for the 4th graders. My 5th graders will either take the Science Blueprint on that day or also do a writing prompt for their report cards.

Please note that letters went home yesterday about report card conferences. I am open to meeting with everyone. Some letters requested that we meet. Please return the notice ASAP with your preferred times chosen. First come…first served. I will send home confirmations on March 1st.

I hope that your child shared with you the visitor we had yesterday, named Jeremy Galy. He is a foriegn exchange student from France. Mr. Ricketts and I are part of a program through SDSU called ISTEP. We have been chosen in the San Diego county to receive and host ambassadors from around the world in our classrooms every year to expose the students to diversity. We learn about the country and they share their culture with us. It’s an exciting program and we are lucky to be involved. Hopefully we will learn some words in French, find out all about the country and its people. We might even represent France at the multicultural fair at the end of the school year. Regardless, your child will be enriched through this experience.

Just a reminder that 5th grade students will have the Physical Education examine at the beginning of March. They have been taught how to properly do the stretches and exercises. They should be practicing every chance they get! I have sent home a log for your convenience to monitor their progress.

The students have a culminating literature circle activity that was assigned today. Ask to see the direction page. It is due March 13th. they will wear their t-shirts to share and then they will be put on display in the auditorium.

On March 1st I will be pulling students and listening to them read for their report card. I am noticing on AR reports that some students have not been reading the 30 minutes every night for homework. It’s been 5 weeks and some students have not earned very many points. Reports will go home on Friday about the AR. Please monitor. It is so important that they continue to read to keep the skill up.

Other important dates for students and parents:

February 21st – Spring pictures

February 25th – Lit. circle meeting #4

March 4th – Lit. circle meeting #5

March 5th – 4th grade writing test

March 7th & 8th – Science Fair – Parent conferences and minimum days begin

March 13th – Lit. Circle T-shirts due

March 13th – AR goal party at lunch recess

March 14th – Possible walk to lunch (reward for earning the paper clip chain.  they are only two away- Report cards go home

March 15th – Awards assembly and last day of school

There are two more activities that we MIGHT participate in. There may be a movie day to reward the students for doing well on the writing exam. My entire class will go if this gets organized. Secondly, there may be a science day at PETCO Park with a Padre game following. If this gets organized, I would like for our class to participate. However, both of these activities will require adult drivers and supervision. I will let you know more information soon.

We are busy and thriving in room 502!
